An inside look at how our team combines music preparation, crowd-reading, and expertise to create unforgettable wedding moments on the dancefloor.
Introduction
At XWaveEvents, we pride ourselves on delivering unforgettable wedding experiences—and music plays a huge role in that magic. When you book one of our DJs, it's because you trust our reputation, our energy, and the way we bring celebrations to life. This guide shares how we work with couples to find the perfect balance between your musical tastes and our professional expertise.
What We Recommend
In our experience, the best results come when couples provide some musical direction—typically a playlist of 20–35 songs they absolutely love (feel free to create a Spotify playlist and share it with us). This helps us understand your style and allows us to craft a musical journey that blends your favorite songs with proven dancefloor hits, ensuring the energy stays high and your guests remain engaged.
This approach works especially well if your taste includes popular or familiar genres like current and classic hits. And if curating music isn’t your thing, no worries—just leave it to us. You can also tell us what genres you like and we’ll take it from there. Whether you provide guidance or give the DJ total freedom to shine, we’ll make sure your wedding feels uniquely you.
Reading the Crowd
Our DJs do more than just play music—they read the room and vibe off the energy of your guests. We combine your favorite genres with real-time crowd feedback to keep the dancefloor alive. You can trust that while we’ll play your top songs, we’ll also use our instincts to keep the energy flowing.
Working with Niche Tastes
Sometimes couples give us playlists filled with songs from niche genres or lesser-known tracks. While we love discovering new music, it’s important to know that some songs just don’t translate well to the dancefloor—whether due to tempo, tone, or unfamiliarity. In these cases, we’ll reach out and discuss your priorities: Would you rather hear your obscure favorites, or have your guests dance to more familiar tunes? Keep in mind that we can incorporate niche song selections during dinner as background music if the songs don’t suit the dancing portion. Our ultimate goal is to reflect your style while still giving your guests an incredible time.
A Note on Personal Taste and the Dancefloor
Music is a deeply personal form of expression—what moves one person may not land the same way for another. When thinking about your wedding dance music, we encourage you to picture the people you’re inviting and consider what will resonate with them. The sweet spot is finding songs that feel like you while still connecting with your guests. That’s where the real magic happens.
Specialty Songs
The exception to the above guidelines are when it comes to specialty songs such as your first dance and parent dances. Feel free to choose songs that may be personal and meaningful to you. We can also share a playlist of popular specialty songs if you need, so feel free to reach out.
Do Not Play
If there are songs you prefer not to hear, feel free to provide a Do Not Play list for any songs or genres you’d prefer to avoid. These are your moments, and we want the music to feel right.
Cocktail Hour
If we’ll be providing music for a cocktail hour (depending on our arrangements together), our go-to preference is to generally play a mix of light jazz, or chilled beachy vibey electronic music. Since cocktail music is meant to set the mood in the background, we recommend leaving it in our hands to curate a vibe that feels just right.
Ceremony Music
Likewise, if we’ll be providing music for your Ceremony (again depending on our arrangements together), we can provide a playlist of popular ceremony music to help you choose according to your taste and style.
When Extra Curation Is Needed
If your musical tastes are eclectic or outside the mainstream, and your preference is to provide a longer playlist with specific guidelines—or if you're requesting rare tracks that need to be sourced and purchased—please note that this requires significant preparation beyond the standard prep time for a wedding. We’re more than happy to accommodate, but we want to be transparent about the extra work involved, and in these cases, a preparation fee may apply. Curating and organizing a large volume of specific requests can take several hours—usually billed at $100 per hour.
The Benefits of Planning Early
One of the best things you can do is finalize your music details as early as possible. We know this is an exciting time, but locking in your song preferences and specialty requests ahead of time ensures we can give you the attention you deserve. To avoid last-minute stress, we ask that all details be finalized and submitted at least three weeks before your big day. With our DJs' packed schedules, last-minute submissions may not be possible. Let’s get everything locked in early, so you can focus on other elements of your big day.
Final Music Review
After you've shared your music preferences, we'll schedule a final review to go over all the details, song choices, the wedding timeline, and any special requests. This ensures we're all aligned and ready to deliver a seamless, personalized experience. We’re excited to bring your vision to life and make your wedding day unforgettable!
